I'm Not from Challis

Silence is golden.

Do you appreciate silence as much as I do? After a day of having 150 students pass through my room, playing, singing, shouting, laughing, cursing, yelling, and calling my name, riding home in silence (or to NPR) is the sweetest sound! But here's what I don't understand-people these days loved being plugged in to their music. Don't you forfeit being tuned in to your surroundings with those things?
I've never worn headphones and doubt I ever will. I'm afraid I'll miss something. Like silence.

  • ... unless you're listening to Simon and Garfunkel. Silence rules. Also, the absence of a bunch of people yelling and carrying on rules. How come we don't have a morpheme in English that means "the absence of," so we have to communicate the concept so awkardly, or else express it with a negative?

  • I prefer to be headphoneless. In fact, once I hiked Havasupai with a group of people and everyone but me had a walkman (it was the olden days). With no one to talk to, I counted my steps from the village to the "cave" where we camped for the night: 13,066. Have you ever counted that high?

  • Mom, I would've scoffed (and did) at your adoration of silence years ago, but I'm beginning to see the light. Sometimes thinking is just the ticket. But I must say headphones are nice when silence isn't an option, like when your students are cussing you out. Just pop in those headphones and enjoy some downhome Donny Osmond as you write up their referall.

  • I too appreciate the sound of silence. Especially in the following situations:
    1. taking a nap on the couch on a Sunday afternoon
    2. 6:30 am and no children coming in to wake me up
    3. all three children so enchanted by the dinner I made, none have time or energy to waste on fighting

I have to say I do enjoy the tv on at night - even if there's nothing good on. The noise is somewhat calming to me.

  • I sometimes have a desire and need for silence, too. (Read I have children ages 7, 5 and 2) but I can't get things done without my headphones on. I listen to NPR while cleaning my house, doing the dishes, vacuuming, or just straightening things. Otherwise I get distracted and don't finish the task at hand. Some people are just weird that way, I guess.

    I'm glad you are blogging!
